Recently I wrote a small article about Don McLean classic "American Pie".
In writing this story I remembered other # 1, "Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack, who topped the charts in 1973.
It occurred to me that "killing Me Softly" was written on or inspired by a performance of Don McLean. Then I began to find the facts as straight as possible.
It was widely reported on the web as "Killing Me Softly "was written on (or inspired by) a witness Don McLean concert by Roberta Flack. This is not the case.
It is also widely (and apparently with good reason) which documented the singer Lori Lieberman has inspired the song, not Roberta Flack.

In 1973, Don played a show at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. Singing "musical chairs", inspired Lori Lieberman to write the song "Killing Me Softly" on a napkin. "I was really Blasa © leaving, "said Lieberman." I do not know who he was, but when he came on stage, I was fascinated. I felt as if he knew me and their songs were of my life. I felt like singing in my soul. "
Originally known as Killing Me Softly With His Blues, a poem by Lori has inspired composers Norman Gimbel & Charles Fox to write the song for her. It was released on their first album in 1971.
Hearing is a music company Air flight Roberta Flack program landing of an investigation of the song and contacted Gimbel & Fox and was proposed to save in 1973 became a No. 1 for her. Lieberman to this day has not given credence to the words and version. Mr. McLean said he had no idea the song was about him. "Someone called me and he said he had written a song about me and was No. 1, "McLean said." It was an honor and a pleasure, and I give Lieberman the credit. My songs always have come from my personal thoughts and experiences, is too heavy, when someone is moved and touched by them like Lori. "The song was published by The Fugees in 1997.

This is where the mystery comes into play.
While I am not aware of all details of this case. Perhaps some type of agreement reached between Ms. Lieberman and composers credited, Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox (the two veteran composers with large CV), and / or editor (s) of the song.
But the statement in the press release on the website Lori Lieberman (Lieberman to this day has not given credence to the words and the version. ") is disconcerting.
I LoriLeiberman.com writing to ask for clarification. This is what he wrote:
"I read that Fox / Gimbel print song "Killing Me Softly" was inspired by the poem of Ms. Lieberman's Killing Me Softly With His Blues, writes about Don McLean. This seems fairly well documented ... My question is why in the world, Ms. Lieberman was not credited as co-author of the song? In Nashville, it will never happen. The boy or girl with the IDEA is equally important, if not more, than the word and melody. "
I have received no response.
This is the part concern. This is not a case where someone tells a composer, "Hey, I've seen this type of Down in the conduct of Bluebird and was killing him." And then, the composer write a song and a performer or memorable performance. Lori Leiberman actually wrote a poem (LYRICS) called "Killing Me Softly With His Blues". It is precisely this line, "Killing Me Softly", which is the basis for the hit song in the world. In fact, "Killing Me Softly" became a cliché of pop culture, reminiscent of "Hit the Road Jack" or countless words that have been popularized by songs. (Except in this case, Lieberman could have been the origin of the phrase!) "Killing Me Softly" is a standard and, to this observer, it appears that at least Lieberman, co-author.
I do not understand. Fortunes have been made with "Killing Me Softly". And Lori Lieberman is credited with the "introduction", the song (after the first save )...? Big Whoop. Great songs are treasures, literally and figuratively.
"Killing Me Softly" was a huge success. Roberta Flack in 1973, the version was # 1 twice, you get beaten off the top spot by The O'Jays "Love Train", but then reappear after # 1 "Love Train".
The song was played and / or registered by the industry giants of music like Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and many others, and even resulted in a number of foreign languages. It was a Hip-Hop # 2 remake in 1996 with Lauryn Hill The Fugees. The picture was featured in 2002 MOTION About A Boy. "Killing Me Softly" is one of the decisions "of race tracks.
So, as a composition student and industry of music as an educator who tries to dispel myths and Creative Inspire young people to get out of it in the music and the arts ... and as someone who professes that the success is actually the idea: write songs, movies, entertainment ... I just do not get it. Someone please 'splain to me.
