what kind of real wood table[s] would you want?
If you could have someone build a custom, handmade table for you-what kind of table would you want [occasional, nesting, dining,etc.] & what kind of wood[s]?
OAK is the hardest wood I believe. Stands up to use. Mahogany is beautiful and strong. Go to a nearby carpentry shop or mill and they can help you and show you woods. They can show you stains on each wood also.

When decorating a living room, most people insist it contain a small table in front of their couch to hold beverages and snacks, but today's modern coffee tables do more than just hold coffee cups. They are designed to fit into most every décor and come equipped with a variety of tops.
